2021 Windham Sailing Club memberships expire October 31 and 2022 season memberships are available November 1st on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested in joining the club or renewing you membership login (returning members) or click “become a member”(new members) to join and pay your dues anytime after November 1st, 2021. Ethanol free gas available locally
It has come to my attention (via Mark Hanna) that ethanol free gas is available for sale locally in Wilmington at Nido service station, 77 West Main St. As all boat people know, the 10% ethanol gas available everywhere is not the greatest choice for a marine engine. Treat your engine right with the good stuff.
2020 Season Updade
Dear fellow sailors,
We hope that you and your families and friends are and continue to stay healthy during this difficult time.
On Tuesday April 7th the executive committee had a teleconference to discuss club activities in light of the pandemic. The unanimous opinion of the club officers is that the club should cancel all activities for the 2020 sailing season. With social distancing being the number one tactic in combating the transmission of the disease, we feel that we should not get together to plop our moorings. Experts warn that this pandemic will likely come in waves until the time that a vaccine can be widely distributed. Our thinking is that even if conditions improved and we could safely put our moorings out in the late spring or early summer, conditions could later deteriorate making pulling them unsafe. To be clear, it is the decision of the executive committee that no moorings should be placed on the lake this season by club members. If you use the lake this season, you should follow Great River Hydro’s rules that apply to all those who are not members of The Windham Sailing Club. In the event that there is some significant change in public policy regarding the pandemic, the EC may reconsider this decision.
WSC 50th Anniversary History, Part 4
1973
Ken Lady was elected Commodore. Races were held every other weekend from early June until Labor Day. A scoring system too complicated to explain here established the champions of the year. Gerry and Carolee Seibert started to dominate the racing.
1975
Bob and Hedi Strebi sold their Thistle, bought a Blue Jay and joined the club. They had been watching the activity at Ward’s Cove since it began. They had their first exposure to sail boat racing during the so called “Spring Series”. It was a humbling experience. Wnhen the finally crossed the finish line after a “twice around the course race” the committee boat was already collecting the course markers. Bob and Hedi had read all the books about racing, but some essential details had escaped them, for example how and where to run the spinnaker sheets. The club members were very supportive and enlightened them on the matter. They set and doused the spinnaker 12 times. They had even brought a practice marker. At the next race they were introduced to the supreme experience of sail boat racing namely to watch the entire fleet minus one boat over the transom of their boat. Nevertheless Gerry and Carolee ended the year as club champions.
